Hi

My 12 year old has been losing hair on the side of his head which we were sure was caused by him pulling it, which he was.  Now, however its clear he is losing by the fistfull every day. He has curly red hair so I am so worried it will just look too strange soon. We are seeing a new dermatologist, on steroid creme now, and there is some growth on the places that were gone, but its so so hard to see it just coming off him now - so much faster than before.  I hope the creme is not making it worse.  Any kind words would be great! I hope every day this stops, but just so worried.

Thanks.

I would feel very encouraged he already has regrowth!  Very postive sign!  We went to three dermatologists before we found one who was relatively helpful. Make sure you find one who isn't saying there is no hope, gives you cream and sends you on your way. I would encourage you to research inflammatory foods and to avoid them. I would have him checked for Vitamin deficiencies, especially Vitamin D and Zinc. Consider a daily probiotic for immune system support. Most of all give him encouragement and love.  Never give up hope. If you research some of the work being done at Columbia University you may feel more encouraged. I believe our kids will see a cure.  Hang in there.

Thanks Stephanie for your kind words.  I am encouraged by the growth.  Its just so hard since he is losing it so much faster.  He couldn't finish his breakfast this morning because there was hair in his syrup :(

We will be seeing an acupuncturist soon too who will make some suggestions on his diet.  I just can't believe how little the dermatologists care about this.  I cannot get them to return my calls, I need someone who is on our team! It's so hard to watch a once confident kid lose hope and esteem.  I am trying my best to stay positive but its just so hard.

It is infuriating!! I felt like I was more knowledgeable about it then they were, especially for non-medical therapies.  The first few months can be rough...it's so hard to accept the lack of control over it.  I thought I would also mention, I have read some about the onset (as well as resolution) of alopecia with the onset of puberty.  I didn't research much more about it because it didn't fit our situation but maybe something for you to consider, since your little guy is 12. I would also encourage you to seek out a naturopathic physician.  I am lucky in that my childhood friend chose that as a career and she has been significantly more helpful than all the dermatologists we have seen.

We went to the acupuncturist today and that was intense :) We took some herbs away and if he can stomach it, he will try.  We have more shots in a week and are putting on our creme meanwhile.  Next week we also go to the endocrinologist who will run a check of everything I guess.  Just to be safe, even though all the drs we have seen say dont bother.

Its very possible that hormones have something about bringing this on,  just not sure what you would do about it!

thanks for listening !
