Hi All! My six year old granddaughter is rapidly heading to AT  :-(  I have been searching for child size scarves, turbans and/or knit caps - with little luck. Right now, I'm specifically looking for a comfortable, light-weight cap or "beanie" that will stay on during her gymnastics class - and something that could also be used under her (horse-back) riding helmet.  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

My daughter was 10 when it started f or her.  She wore bandanas and hats but hated it--thought everyone noticed her too much and she stood out.  We found that Hair Club has a kids program, and it was the best solution.  If you have one near you, I highly suggest talking to them.  It is free up until age 18--you only pay for special hair products.  They are given 3 hairpieces a year.  They are wonderful and look so natural.  You pick the length and texture, curly or straight, and they style if for you.  Stays on tight--no slipping or moving like wigs do.  She'll forget she's even wearing it.

It gives them so much more confidence in themselves.  Definitely worth looking into.  Good luck.

Thank you, Karen! We are aware of the Hair Club for Kids. It's great to hear a positive "review" of them! They aren't too far from us. We will be calling them shortly. Getting a diagnosis note on Friday @ her next derm appt. I believe we need to wait until she is 6? Her birthday is in a couple of weeks. Thanks, again!

Sounds like my daughter, even the birthday (turning 9 in a few weeks)...she is petite and wears bandanas-just got a batch from www.headsuphairwear.com.  They are wide headwraps/soft bandanans and come in an assortment of colors.  She horseback rides as well and wears her bandana under her helmet.  She doesn't mind wearing it/they are comfortable.  Just doesn't want others to notice the extent of her hair loss.  Her hair is mostly gone from the back of her head and spotty gone from her sides and top of her head.  I just ordered her a toppette and have my fingers crossed and hope she has enough hair for it to grip on to.  I don't know what will stay on during gymnastics class....if your granddaughter is AT, a vacuum wig or gripper seems like the answer.  I am told they stay on in such a situation, but I don't know this firsthand.  Good luck!  It is a journey.

Thank you so much, Patty. We're in Georgia now for 13 years - granddaughter was born here - but we're originally from Long Island - so we have even more in common  ;-) Thanks for the suggestion for her riding helmet - appreciate it! My Babygirl sounds like your daughter's mirror image: she still has quite a bit of hair in the back, but almost totally gone on the sides and top. She seems perfectly at ease with her hair loss (so far). She may or may not wear any head covering. She actually told me today that she doesn't want to cover her baldness - just wants to let everyone know what alopecia is! Amazing girl!  I asked her, "What if you wake up one morning & decide you feel like wearing a hat that day? Why don't we go get some, so you have them on hand - just in case?" I just envisioned a melt-down, somewhere down the line... So, we went on a shopping spree today for some cute hats & also found perfect head band/wraps. I told her she doesn't have to wear anything at all (except in the winter & in the sun) unless she wants to. Happy 9th to your daughter!

We've found bandanas the best way to go for gym for my 8 yo daughter. Beanies and other hat types tend to fall off when she's hanging upsidedown or standing on her head. As time's gone on and she's become more confident about her AT, I've occasionally seen her just whip her bandana off altogether and just go bald - it saves her worrying about headwear falling off I guess! And it makes me very proud of her.  Watching this clip helped her. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdOxc8Vch2U ;

Thanks for the gymnastics advice, Wendy! I found great, wide head bands today that may work. And I had already gotten some bandanas. But, she will probably choose to "just be me," as she puts it. I am in awe of this kid's spirit! And, I just clicked on the video (thanks for sharing it) and I had actually already showed it to her! Great minds think alike!

Aren't kids amazing?! ;)

Hi there.  There is an awesome headscarf called the beaubeau designed by a woman who has alopecia.  I have several of these that are fashionable.  They are made to fit different head sizes, and she has a special small size for young girls.  There are also ones specifically for working out.  Here is the link.  They are totally worth the money, especially if she wants to wear them daily.  They give a sense of fashion and feel like an accessory.  http://www.4women.com/

My 4 year old son has AU and I just bought him some soft beanies from headcovers.com which is for kids...hope everything works out for you!

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions! My Lil darlin' is now AU. Back in October, she "took control" (as she put it) and shaved what little hair she had left. My little bald beauty doesn't seem to want or need a head cover. She enjoys wearing pretty headbands, but it's just an accessory to her outfit. Other then insisting she wear a hat because it's cold, I let her "be herself" (her words again!). Gotta love & admire this amazing, spunky girl!! We'll deal with the sun of summer when it gets here...

Chemo beanies!!! www.chemobeanies.biz my daughter wears them all the time. She is 10 and has about 90% loss of hair. Add me as a friend and you can see them on her. They are super cute and light weight. She has one to go with just about any outfit you could imagine. She wears them for soccer and horseback riding also.
