My 7 year old daughter has recently been diagnosed with AA which quickly turned into Universalis. She has lost about 90 percent of the hair on her arms, legs and back. She has been complaining a lot about wearing sleeves and pants cause she says it hurts. Has anyone else had this problem? Plus her head is really itchy, is this part of it. Im new to all of this and I am taking it one day at a time right now. Any input would be greatly Appreciated! Thanks!

Hi Joleen

I completely understand what you and your family are going through. My 8 yr old daughter was diagnosed in December 2012 and has lost 80% of her hair on her head. Lately she has also been complaining that her bald spots itch and i have seen her itch them quite often.

To be honest, she had a lice episode before the onset of Alopecia and I thought the itching might be caused by some left over nits etc since I have not used the lice shampoo or anything since her hair started falling.

I have read somewhere that not having protection of hair on the body can cause irritation from the sun as well.

This must be a very trying time for you as it has been for us.

All the best and pls do keep in touch.

My heart goes out to you and your family. How long did it take for your daught to lose 80% of her hair? I'm just trying to figure out if it's gonna get worse and keep losing it or if it will subside. I know it's unpredictable butim just trying to figure out if I should prepare for for more loss or not. Ugh! She was diagnosed two months ago and it moved quickly down to the rest of her body. It hasn't hit her eyebrows or lashes yet. I'm praying it doesn't. I have read in some rare cases you will feel numbness, tingling and itching. Does your daughter have the discoloration on the bald spots? Thank you so much for responding, I truly appreciate it!! I just need to reach out and get as much info as I can right now. I'm sure you understand. Joleen :)

Hi Joleen,

She has lost the hair over the last 3 months. I have not seen any discoloration yet.The hardest part about AA is not knowing what will happen. I am so afraid to even comb her hair because clumps of it fall out. Every morning on the pillow i find hair she has shed during the night :-(. I have gotten much better at handling it now than I was before. She seems to be handling it much better than me and that is the silver lining for me. As long as she continues to be her true self, in spite of the challenge of AA, i will find a way of coping with it. I am sure you feel the same way too.

I have a son with Alopecia totalis. He first lost his hair when he was one. It did not start to grow back until the dermatatologist suggested that I put topical steroids on his scalp. His scalp was very very itchy so he really needed the steroids for the itching. His hair grew back over 6-8 months. He kept it for awhile, then lost part of it. We got more meds for the bald spots. His hair grew back again. He had hair for several months and then it fell out again and it is all gone now. I am using a low dose steroid on his head right now and am seeing some growth. I am hoping it will grow back again like every other time. Waiting to see.
