Hello Friends, I was diagnosed with AA in March with a small, but slowly growing patch, but now my eyelashes are starting to shed. Does this mean that I am progressing to AU? Will my eyelashes grow back? Is there a way to treat them to promote growth and/or reduce loss? I am responding well to cortisone shots in my scalp, so I'm very surprised that my eyelashes are falling out. I see the dermatologist in two weeks, but I wanted to hear what others' have experienced with shedding eyelashes.

On a side note, I am more than shocked about my eyelashes - I am SO upset and sad. I know that "it's just hair," and I feel so bad that I am feeling sorry for myself when there are many other people with life-threatening and disabling diseases, but I can't help it - I feel like I am losing a limb.

Thanks for listening - I really appreciate it, especially learning of others' experiences with eyelashes.

My son started with patches in his hair at 18 months and it progressed to AU (no eyebrows or eyelashes) by the time he was three years old. However, he is now 6 and has a lot of fuzz on his head. Your body is reacting to something. No one knows what triggered the hair loss and no one knows what will turn it off. Keep building your immune system and detox if you can. Keep hope alive as well. Since so much is unknown it means that you can reverse this. Just don't become obsessed.

Thanks so much, Angie -- you are so right, it's easy to obsess over this and I really need to remind myself NOT to do that. I will take your advice and focus on improving my immune system. Thanks for sharing your son's experience - I am sending lots of good wishes and luck his way!!

I tattooed eyebrows on but havent found anything for my eyelash fix yet....I know how it can feel like a death....I lost all my hair ...All....in less then 3 or 4 months....There are alot of us out here for support....On the bright side..KIDS think I am a PIRATE when I wear a Bandana...Take care , you will get used to it ..Get a Nice wig !!!

I could be wrong, but isn't AU total body hair loss? Also, isn't it common even for people with AA to lose eyebrow and eyelash? I know it's been sad so many times, but I try to keep a positive mind and no doubt at times it's here ,. Be strong, there are many people who are here to support us.

Everyone, thank you SO much for your insight and and support - I truly appreciate it. I am so glad to know that I am not alone. I am grateful for your kindness and willingness to reach out. Stay strong and keep in touch!

I lost my lashes when I became AU about 2 years ago. Unfortunately, the most difficult thing about this condition is the complete unpredictability of it. So frustrating!

Angie's advise is good... focus on health, immunity and detox. This is something you can control and it does help. Also, it's never "just hair." It is so much more and it is ok to grieve it when it goes.

I have my brows tattooed and am contemplating having liner tattooed as well. I have gotten pretty adept at putting on false lashes. They are popular now, so there's many to choose from. I receive many compliments on my lashes now, which is kind of nice.
