I am wondering if anyone has any advice about the effects of frequent washing on the rate of hair loss.  I am a teacher, so while I'm off for the summer (and just receiving diagnosis a month ago) I have been avoiding the everyday shampoo which is a must during the school year.  I've noticed though, and it may just be my imagination, that my head feels itchier after a couple days without shampooing.  I',m wondering if anyone's had advice from a dermatologist about this.  It is so heartbreaking seeing that wad of hair in the drain after my shower.  I guess I'm losing hair all over my head at this point, but especially around hair-line.  Also, is there any shampoo out there that can help with the itching?

Hi Jenny,

I wash my hair 2-3 times per week. I don't feel more or less washing really affects my FFA, but I have curly hair that is naturally very dry so I don't build up oil on my scalp very quickly. I use Giovanni Tea Tree shampoo and conditioner. It has a nice tingly feeling but does not dry out my hair at all. My dermatologist recommended Nioxin, but I haven't tried it. I should also add that I am extremely gentle with my hair since my diagnosis. No hard brushing with hair brushes, no extreme heat styling, etc. I think my hair is much healthier because of this, JMO. Best of luck:)

I saw my Derm today. She says it's best to wash your hair everyday if it doesn't dry your hair/scalp out to much. This helps keep the follicles clean. If your hair/scalp get dry or itchy it's ok to skip a day. It's all about what your hair/scalp can handle since we all react differently to treatment. She is having me switch back to rotating between DHA with zinc and Head and Shoulders Clean w/zinc. One day a week I am going back to use Biolage shampoo/conditioner and see how that goes. I can use any conditioner I want just so I don't rub it into my scalp. I am in the burnt out stage now, thank goodness. So now I am dealing with plaque like stuff on one side of my head that gets pretty itchy and flaky. I was treating that with Clobetasol foam which helps sometimes. Now she is having me stop that and try using an oil. I haven't gotten it from my pharmacy so I don't know the name of it yet. As far as coloring, she has not seen yet that it has any effect on FFA and to continue doing it if I want. I tried the Ketaconazole shampoo and Clobetasol shampoo awhile ago and didn't find it help made a difference. Hope this info helps

have you ever heard of co-washing?  It's basically "conditioner" wash.  I had problems with shampoos in general, from Head and Shoulders, (which dried my hair out completely) to "moisturizing/natural shampoos.  Still didn't work.  I went on a Long Hair care forum for all cultures.  At the time, It was called "LHF".  these ladies of all cultures had gorgeous hair and scalp.

Not all of them, there were some just now starting out learning how to grow their hair.  I found out the main theme between them?  They didn't use shampoo.  They used a conditioner as their shampoo.  I started doing this, and it seems to be working.  Also, they all suggest ACV. Apple Cider vinegar, which washes the DHT off the scalp.  It's all natural.  I used to do the ACV and cowashing routine every other day.

Living here in the desert, i had to re adjust it to once a week.  Sometimes because of the extreme lack of humidity here? i will only wash every 2 weeks.  My hair is extremely curly, thus, it's not a problem.  the only advantage this ARID environment has?  your clothes dry in less than a few minutes if you handwash them.
