Hi from Kansas City,

My derm wants me to take Kenelog intralesional shots. Has anyone had bad side effects from these shots? I have read about  bumps the size of fly bites that never go away. I have also read the skin of the bumps becomes very rough and scaly. How frequently are these shots given and for how many months? How often are they effective?

Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated. I have to make a decision soon.

Thank you, Nancy

Hi Nancy, I had three kenelog injections.  They might have stopped the hair loss for a bit, but then I had a reaction of very bad flushing in the face and neck.  My scalp was scarlet and itching.  I took a photo for my derm.  He said he thought he saw swelling also.  Now, I am off of all steroids because of allergic reactions.  Crazy, but true.

Hi Sallywess,

Thanks for the reply. I am willing to try anything that doesn't have a lot of side effects. I have heard that these shots can leave you disfigured with dents in the forehead, scaly bumps in the scalp and blue veins appearing. My disease is progressing very slowly and I do not know if it is worth the risk. But you did think it stopped the hair loss until you had to discontinue them? I cannot get any data about how often the shots are effective. So this leaves me sitting on the sideline.

I am actually not going to have the shots anymore. What I noticed is for about a week I had a significant increase in hair loss. I have pain in my head, like a head ache type pain for one week and that is how long the increases hair loss takes place. The derm says that maybe it is during the time of the natural increase of shedding, but I don't buy it. Since I also haven't experienced hair growth I don't see the benefit of doing the shots any longer. Everyone is different and reactions can be different by individual.
I had a bad reaction to the shots too. Increased shedding for several weeks after, and increased redness and irritation. Then the skin that had been injected turned very pale and thin looking. I also developed a "dent" in my forehead. Thankfully these side effects were not permanent and went away several months after discontinuing the shots. This is just my experience. Some people have reported a more positive experience.

I can't offer any advice for the shots other than my dermatologist was very direct with me: FFA is permanent, irreversible, no known cause and no known cure. He mentioned that there are many possible injections/treatments that MAY slow the progress, but the result will not change. I declined any painful injections and treatments, if the results are that I will lose my hair no matter what.
