I have had AU now for over 35 years. In my case, it started with the birth of our first child. Within 2 weeks of her birth I was wearing wigs and shortly after started noticing I was losing body hair as well. I have never experienced any sign of regrowth except when we lived in Holland and a Dutch doctor gave me high doses of thyroid meds, I had regrowth of eyelashes and brows. Then we returned to the US and no doctor here will give me the high does, so no regrowth since then.

I also have the red spots on the nape of my neck. I never saw it before I lost my hair. It does appear to be fading though.

Hi! I've had AU for 26 years now. I, too, have that red mark on the back of my neck - weird!!! My mother always called it a "stork bite", but I think that type of birth mark usually fades and mine never did. Do you think that was some sort of sign of things to come? I can't imagine how it would be linked, but would LOVE for someone to research it! Do you think the folks at MD Anderson and Columbia Pres. are aware of this? LH

I have been AU for 5yrs, started off with AA and very quickly lost the lot.
When I first lost my hair, I too had a red mark like a birthmark, it was at the base of my hairline about 3cm x 3cm. My mum said that as a baby I had a mark there, it was called a Strawberry mark. She also said I did not have any hair till I was 18mths old, and she used to have bonnets with fluff round, as I was a big baby and looked like a boy. The mark has almost gone now, maybe that is because I do not wear hair much.

I had AA for 7 years, and it rapidly progressed to AU within the past year.

I'm curious how many of you with bald heads from either AT or AU have the characteristic red spot on the back of your scalp. I think I see it in the photo under the AT group. I have it, and have observed it on other women with AT and AU. My dermatologist told me it was a birthmark, but I think he's wrong. It seems to be an alopecia marker of some sort. How many of you have it, and is it in the back near the nape of your neck?
