Hello everyone!
I've been reading for the last couple of weeks and decided to participate to see if there's anyone like me, who really doesn't have a lot of money to spend on wigs and with whom can share the issues associated with alopecia.

I participated some in the black hair media forum but it was difficult as most of the people there didn't like to share their sources of hair.
I also realized most of the people here (or some) have AU and tend to use vacuum units.
This post is for those who prefer (for any reason) to use lace units.

So, I'll start sharing my experience so far and the online sites I've bought my units

California lace wigs: used this vendor for three years but my last two units were crap. Not sure what happened but really disappointed with them. Hair quality was really low. I ordered Malaysian but they sent me overly processed Indian.

Wigs royal: it's ok. Hair is coarse. They say they have European hair, but that's Indian, so beware. Hair caps are fine. Hairline is debse and you need to tweeze a lot.

Rex (Chinese vendor) bad experience. They sent me horrible hair.

So, I was planning on buying a unit from Ruth's beauty but read that the business is closed now and they're taking orders and keeping the money without sending the wigs. Terrible.

Online sites that seem to have decent wigs for $350:

Sassy secret
Rpg show
Finelacewigs
Bestlacewigs
Silkawigs (I ordered a unit today so I'll update when I receive it)

Online sites a little more expensive (around $500)

Zara wigs
Gardeaux wigs

Have you tried any of those???

I hope you've found my post useful. I know how difficult it is to search online.

hi on the moon,

that is too bad you were not happy with your silkawig. I ordered one last year from them and it was the best quality wig ive ever had. It was the European virgin hair and was very soft and high quality. No matting - which I thought was amazing as every other wig ive had matted constantly. The fit was very good as well. the only real problem I had with it was the density was way too thick in the silktop area. Which as most of us know is one of the most important things for having a natural "non wiggy" looking wig.

I had never ordered from any of those custom online websites before so I cant compare it to them, but I had been wearing wigs for about 10 years and have worn a variety of salon bought wigs from various brands and none were as nice as this one.

Ive ordered another one and it should arrive by the end of this month so can update again on how it is. I asked for much lower density in the silk top area so hopefully they will get it right.

have you had any luck with other wigs since then?

I heard that Gardeau wigs were good, but i have never tried them. How much do these recommendations charge for a long wig. Frankly, i think you have to be pretty well off to afford a lot of these custom wigs. I do think it's a valid expense, if you can afford them. I am trying lower cost lace wigs, but there are so many choices, it is very difficult to know where to spend your money. And it's highly dissapointing to receive inferior goods and the hassle that comes with them. I want to look good but am so wary of promises made. I've been looking where black people get hair, and make there own beautiful wigs. Since my hair is medium to dark brown, i have found some vendors that can do these colors. Most black women do not spend that much on beautiful hair. Wish every one luck as this all a difficult prosess

I have corresponded with Rachel of Gardeaux wigs but have not bought one.  Her color work on her hair is exceptional, though, and having colored one of my own, I don't know how she affords to sell her hair for the prices she does (when you get into rooting plus high/low lighting you're talking about a lot of time invested in coloring, and given how delicate you have to be with wigs versus a human head of hair, it's truly an art).

But she seems to have consistent high quality and in reading her online reviews, took care of any customers that ended up with hair pieces that might have been less quality than expected.  When my budget improves, will definitely order from her with confidence.

If you're not a semi-albino, like me (what a PITA!), and can wear brunette or red colors, I would check out Malky hair on eBay and online.  She sells sheitels, so you can get a monotop with silk lining but no lace front, but the hair almost always looks to be exceptional quality.  You can get a wefted design for under $300 for med length and you can get a monotop med length for a little more than that if I remember correctly.  I was looking at a much longer piece, monotop, for around $650 that I'd hoped to be able to highlight.  She was also excellent to correspond with and said I could call to order and we could discuss any options that I might need (size, colors, etc).

In general, there seem to be 40% off sales a couple times a year for the regular "off the shelf brands" (Rene of Paris, etc).  I bought a Louis Ferre HH for 40% off plus a new customer coupon of 10 or 15% off one year around a holiday (Memorial day?  4th of july?  Think it was spring or summer).  Long ago I thought I should start a calendar to keep track of those annual sales, because my budget always dictates that I need to get the best deal, but I've failed to keep that calendar.  :-)   I do know almost every holiday gets you at least 30% off of major brands.

I also cruise the clearance sections religiously at all the sites.  Since I wear such a narrow range of color, this hardly ever pays off for me, but for those of you who can go brunette to auburn, there are a lot more options available for you.  Ace and Wow seem to have better sales than Vogue and Wigs.com, in my experience, but that might be different for you.

It really is such a gamble and there are so many factors involved when buying hair.  I have a dream that someday I can become a repeat customer somewhere, maybe with Rachel or Malky and have a standing order of the right color coming to me every six months or so, and not have to gamble with these other sites.  Good luck, everyone!  Great idea to start this thread!

Hi unfair!

Gardeaux wigs are not on the high end quality. they purchase their units, color them and "fix" the hairline, but they don't offer quality hair.

It's such a difficult task to find a vendor that complies with all the qualities that are essential for us to feel comfortable...ugh

I have received my silka wig. Just like last time it is really amazing hair quality. I got colour #3 which is a sort of coppery-chocolate medium brown. I asked for lower density on top - 90% which I highly recommend doing if you want a more natural look. Last time I received it it was way too thick on top and this makes it look a lot wiggier. 130% density elsewhere, which is more than enough thickness, I might go for 120% next time.

Only problem was they confused the silicone grip I asked for for Poly so just make sure you clarify what you want when it comes to the details because it makes a big difference. This is my second time ordering from them and I think I will again. I am happy to have found a buyer than I am happy enough to buy from more than once! and we all know this can be very hard. I have only ordered their European virgin human hair I cannot speak for the quality of the brazillian etc.  For me it worth the money. to Laurenseav - I am not well off at all, but for me having a high quality wig that is comfortable is too important to me to skimp on price. I don't like anyone being able to tell I wear a wig, and if I have to live with alopecia I at least want to live through it with the best wig I can find for what I can afford. I buy a wig about once a year, and I save up for it and make sure I can put money aside as it just as much a priority for me as anything else. When I was younger my mom helped me out with the cost of my wigs but I pay for them on my own now and have for several years. It is just something I factor in to my budget now.

I would say overall I am really happy with the two wigs I've gotten from silka wigs. Both times there has always been SOME problem of course - The first time it was too dark and too dense, but still overall a beautiful comfortable wig. Second time colour was better, density was better because I knew what to ask for, but they made the mistake with the Polystrips. But the great thing about ordering from the same place over and over is each time you get closer to getting it just right. Every place has varying degrees of colour, density, texture, size, EVERYTHING, so I find it takes trial and error to get it perfect. Melesha, their sales representative has been very helpful and nice as well. These two wigs have been way nicer than any salon wig I've ever bought and much less expensive as well.

For those wondering about the price- my wig was a 22" European virgin human hair, full lace  and silky straight texture and it came to $548 USD  (I am from Canada though so it was more with exchange rate) I should also say I asked for a 4 X 5 inch Silk Top, so that the part at the crown looks more natural. Go for silk top it looks WAY more realistic than just lace.

I am thinking of ordering another one for summer in a shorter length and lower density, so it will be less hot, and also thankfully less expensive.
If anyone has any more questions about my wigs that's ive gotten from them please don't hesitate to ask me!

When u say it is Virgin, European,  does mean that it is not dyed, or permed? I read an expose on The Human Hair Racquet, and they disclosed that's it's almost impossible to get Virgin European Hair and that's it's very expensive (i think a lot more than u paid)  It was online and they disclosed how the hair market is so corrupt and we really never no what we are getting, lot of bait and switch. Glad u like you're wig, but i doubt it is really European, Virgin hair for that price. Maybe double, at least (especially 22 inches)  But if u like the hair quality and it fits, be happy because what u paid, isn't that much. What is density and how about color?? Did u get a good match (so hair is not dyed)??   Thanks for your help  I paid less for my front lace wig and full lace. Didn't get the silk top, due to money, but i saw some beautiful wigs for about your price, on RPG Show.com   I am getting a selection of Human Hair wigs, so i can rotate them and won't matter if i don't feel like curling one. I am using Flex rods to curl and works great (stays for days)   It is too bad that most of us have spent a lot on bad wigs that we can't even wear. Alopecia is expensive, if u want to look good

I have recently tried a Wig grip and have switched to a size small cap, as i have a very tiny head. The wig grip helps a lot. I am wearing Human Hair wigs with the wig grip, and nothing else. If i am planning a very active day, u can had some " It Stays" or another water soluble solvent.  I do not want to sleep in my wigs and it's very hot in AZ, so i take off my wig ASAP. Soon i will have about 4 human hair wigs, that i will rotate wearing. I still have all my synthetics, but i am loving the human hair, having wavy, or curly look. I am quite poor, so my wigs and upkeep take up a huge portion of my budget. I think i look good most of the time, so, for me, it's not necessary to spend thousands on wigs. I would rather have several lace wigs, then spend tons on "one perfect wig" I think Alopecians are more sensitive, due to our hair loss. But i really don't think regular people out there, are so cognizant of our wig status. I do my best, but i can't spend tons, and will keep trying to find a good source for lace wigs, and lace fronts. The hair industry is a big Raquet, and they pray on us, since we are so vulnerable Have read several expose's stating that claims for European Virgin hair is a farce, and that we are really getting either Indian hair, or some type of Asian. European hair, is v ery scarce and very expensive. May cost 3 times that of Asian hair.

Maybe if i had more money, i might look for European Virgin hair. However, i think the entire industry prays on our vulnerability and it's sad when women ave to pay many thousands a year, to look normal and feel good.Wish i had all the money i have wasted on bad wigs!!!

Hello everyone!

I'm glad your silkawigs turned good for you! I had such bad luck with them...

Juts wanted to update you all about what's going on in my "wig world" :)

I ordered a Milano european virgin with lace on the front last november. they took 15 weeks to send the wig, and when I received, the color was not what I've ordered, plus I ordered wavy and this one is straight. Such a bummer. Worst costumer service I've experienced so far, that "Claire" is annoying and unhelpful.

anyway, I'm searching other alternatives to Milano, because they are unreliable and I'm going through so much stress now.

I've searched on ebay and there are some european kosher wigs that are very pretty, but I don't want to look unnatural.

Any new recommendations?

Hi Onthemoon,

I have found that Ready To Be You wig collections are pretty straightforward check them out.

They are pretty reasonable too. I've ordered a couple of wigs from them and I am very pleased.

Let me know how it turns out for you.

Peace.
