It all started about a year ago. I had a very stressful time. My job was crazy . I had a terrible accident at home when I was alone. It put me into a panic attack. I cut myself washing dishes with a broken glass cup. It cut through the tendons on my right hand all the way to the bone. I was losing so much blood.

the sight of blood makes me woosy . I had to be rushed to the E.R. . And then soon after that My grandmother dies. And I start stressing over that. well I've never had alopecia once in my entire life.

it didn't start until I was nearly 24 years old. maybe a few weeks or so right after the accident and my grandmothers death. my hair started falling out in clumps. I was so confused and worried because I had no idea what was going on . at first I ignored it because I had a lot of hair at the time. and I thought oh well itll stop in a few days probably. I thought it was maybe an infection or something. like maybe ringworm.

so when I noticed that it wasn't stopping I went to the doctor and told them what was going on. she looked at it. and she herself was puzzled. so she said we need to check your thyroid levels. they did that and everything was fine. so she set up an appointment with a dermatologist. when I finally went to the appointment. it only lasted maybe ten minutes. he shined a blue light over my head looked for a second and said Alopecia Areata. I thought to myself what the heck is that?? ive never even heard of it. He said your immune system is out of whack and is attacking your hair follicles. He said it will grow back soon. he gave me a prescription for topical steroids. Betamethasone I believe is what it was. I used it for over the next month and a half and didn't see any improvement. in fact my hair was still falling out at a drastic rate. I would wake up every morning to a pillow full of hair. I knew that something had to be done. I couldn't face the fact of losing all of my hair. a guy who has always had thick wavy hair and now I'm watching it fall all day long.

so I went back to the derm and he suggested cortisone injections directly to the scalp. so he did that and a few weeks later I had most of the hair on my crown grow back. this is my 4th time with the injections. I have a lot of regrowth but what do you know its mostly a clear white color so you cant really see it unless you look at a certain angle. and now I think I am losing the lashes on my left eye. not sure if that's what it is or if its from me rubbing at my eyes too rough from having shampoo in my eye. because my right eye is completely unaffected???  and on top of that my left eyelid is sore?? ive also lost about 40 percent of my facial hair. I have a lot of regrowth in it as ell but also it is a fine white color???? this I don't understand?? its bad enough when it takes hair in the first place but why affect pigment as well??? I hate this god forsaken diease with a passion!!!! I just don't understand where it came from ?? and why am I the only one in my family that has it??? they can say its genetic all they want too but I don't believe so. not for one second. if that was the case there would be more than just one person in a family that has it. it would be more common if it were genetic. I'm just so sick and tired of it. I want to be back to the way I was before!!!

It is so crazy how I can relate to this because this just about exact how it has happened for me. My first appt though my derm did the injections with the topical solution at home.

I'm sorry you've been through so much stress. That's a lot to deal with :( Like you, I've been getting scalp shots and like you, I have some almost translucent white regrowth too. My derm says the colour will eventually return to it. I think the fact that you have a lot of regrowth is really positive and unfortunately, that you'll just have to be patient. It seems like such a gradual process.
