Hi all
I live in Darwin, Australia and am wondering if there are any Aussies out there who can give me some advice about treatment options for Alopecia Areata in Australia. Are the injections rebated under medicare or the pbs scheme?

I am only newly diagnosed, it took me over a year to get in to see a public specialist and he has prescribed Diprosone to be applied twice daily to my two small patches of hair loss on my head and a mild cortisone for my eyebrows. Yet when I search the net, it seems that most people get injections... can anyone comment about what is more effective and how much these injections are in Australia? Who does these injections.. the dermatologist? Is there benefit to joining a private health fund in Australia... ie do you get much back?

Many thanks
Rachel

Hi Rachel

I can't say much about the Aussie system as I was diagnosed in Canada and used our fab health care initially.

I did get injections, for me they were painful and in the end didn't work - i went full blown universalis just over a year and a half ago.

My specialist here costs me $150 each time with nada from my private health and $75 back from medicare.

I get $400 every 3 years for brows & wigs, which isn't a lot at all as it's about $1000 a year for me for that.

Sorry I can't be of more help. If you end up going the route of wigs and silicon brows let me know as I've researched the heck out of how to get them cheaper here as aussie prices and access are a joke and you're WAY better off to order from overseas.

I live on the Gold Coast so it gets pretty hot here so I know how it feels to battle the heat & humidity with wigs too.

Let me know if I can help at ll

cheers

Shannon
