Should we cut her hair?

Does anyone have suggestions for preventing matting/tangles while she lays on her hair??  (Sleeping, laying on couch, etc)  It is to the middle of her back, but the loose hairs seem to be getting matted with the hairs that have not fallen out.  I'm afraid to even gently comb out her hair.  Should be cut it shorter?  I'm afraid if I cut it, I'll less hair to work with to cover her spots.
