Hello folks, new to the forum as I recently got diagnosed with AA.

Someone close to me said around 4 months ago, hey I see a bald spot behind your left ear, the size of a nickel. I didn't even think twice about it and brushed it off as I have always had tons of hair. 2 months passes by and I go to my local barber, he said dude, you have a huge bald spot starting behind your left ear and extending up roughly 2.5" long and 1.5" wide. Well he was not kidding, he showed me in the mirror and I was blown away... what could it be? He suggested go see a doc cause in his 30+ years in the barber trade he had seen this before, this is a condition that takes clients away from him.

I got the biopsy results 4 days ago confirming my condition- alopecia areata. I have to play the cards I am dealt and work through it but I am noticing now in the last couple weeks a rapid amount of hair loss so I guess that I potentially could be bald and this is something I have to prepare for. This is a hard pill to swallow after 42 + years of near perfect hair.... now what?  I went for blood work yesterday to rule out other potential conditions so its wait and see now.

I had no idea that this condition even existed, my entire family on both sides have never heard of it, I am the only one in our family that we know of that has this condition. Very strange indeed.

So I guess big hello to all members on this forum, ill update as it goes and try to learn and listen as much as I can.

Try not to stress and have a healthy diet, not sure if it helps but just in case...

Thank you Return_life, I am not going to lie, this is pretty alarming. I do have a great diet and try not to stress as much as I can

Hi I'm new to this too, and where you're at is about the same position I'm in.... biopsy wound still healing, waiting to see if it's Lupus related. I've had 39 years of gorgeous hair. Hoping this community can share it's wisdom with me.

Hey Finley, sorry to hear that. I just got all my bloodwork test results back. Absolutely normal and no indications of any disease or other problems. I have AA and the next step is to start local steroid injections today and see what happens. I am booked in for 1 pm and we will see how it goes.

I'm glad for you that your bloodwork results were good. I'd love to hear how your injections go, is it painful? How are the side effects? My doctor offered me steroid injections but says I have scarring, so for me it's not the right solution.

Hi Finley, it was painless. It was 40 mg/.ml of Depo-Medrol Lidocaine, the only annoying thing was hearing it swish around as he manipulated the needle around under the skin in the affected area. I was fatigued In the evening, that was it.

Of course my GP reminded me that this is not a cure, this is to hopefully "control" further inflammation of this condition. Booked back for a visit in 6 weeks to see how it goes.
