I was recently diagnosed with Alopecia and am exploring options. I have been doing the topical treatment for about 2 weeks. My insurance does not cover the shots my dermatologist suggested. I would have to pay out of pocket and want to know if its worth it and how much did is cost all together.

I have not gotten any responses but I have had views am I doing something wrong as far as posting?
cost depends where your are...
to my knowledge cortisone shots are still the gold standard but they could help only for minor alopecia aerata. if it is severe l ile almost totalis or universalis then cortisone is useless I think.

good luck
Thanks I am in Texas and my insurance does not cover it because it is considered elective. My bald spot is 3.5 inches in an oval shape. Not sure if that is considered a large arra but it seems likr it to me.
3.5 inches is not small
I would probably try to treat it. don't wait until it's too late.
when alopecia becomes too severe only treatment is immunosuppressor.
I am doing the topical treatment now but cant afford the shots from what I have found out they are 2,000 to 4,000 dollars.
omg cortisone shots should be 100$ max,,, or maybe 200$. am not in the US but in Canada,

try to see another doctor, am not familiar with prices in the USA but cortisone shot is a very basic and cheap drug it shouldn't cost between 2k to 4k,
Ok thank you so much for responding.
all good.
we are all in this together sweetie.
even if I get all my hair back I won't be happy until the day no more people suffer from this disease.

Return_life is spot on with what was described. With a 3.5" spot I would not waste any time getting the injections. If anything it should stop/slow down the shedding if not cause regrowth. My insurance covers my injections I receive every three weeks for my eyebrows (I have AU), but it should not cost much more than $100 a session (and obviously talk to your Derm about exact cost before getting them). Most likely you would get the injections once a month and would know the effectiveness within a month or two. I think it is worth the couple hundred bucks to know...

My insurance does not cover the injections but if they can only be a couple 100 it would be worth it. I didnt really know how big the spot had gotten because it is in the back of my head. It has put me into a pretty bad depression hearing how bad it is and that it might get worse.
I remember when I was little and first diagnosed with alopecia my parents innsurence also did not cover the injections because they considered them to be optional. I was going to be completely bald soon If I didn't get those so my doctor sent multiple letters to my insurance company explaining how the injections were not optional and they did enventually cover them. I believe my parents also wrote a few letters. It sucks they won't automatically cover them but here is an idea at least!
I got good news today, my doctor convinced the insurance to pay for the treatment. I know there is no guarantee it will work but at least it gives me a chance. I am so glad I found this group. I am still pretty upset about it all but more optimistic now. They say it can ve caused y stress and auto immune disorders. I have a lot of both. Any suggestions on how to relieve stress?
