For those moms out there who have a child with alopecia, how do you support your child?

I am 17 years old and have alopecia. My mom has been aware of this since day one and we have been going to the doctor every three weeks. She has always yelled at me for stressing myself out and that I did this to myself. She says I "want to do everything" and as a result, the stress triggered my alopecia. She says band has caused this when really, she has been yelling at me for everything (even my hair loss). She yells at me about my tests, several tasks, and says that I part my hair wrong and that I have to fix it. Today I grew a new bald spot and she said, "I'm sorry. I'm sleeping now." Is this normal behavior? Is this all my fault? And what should I do?

My son developed alopecia unversalis at the age of 17.  It was a total shock to our whole family.  We never even heard of it until then.  He sounds alot like you in that he was active in everything from school, job, sports, music, scouts.  He was a straight A student from the time he was in 4th grade.  He strived to be the best in everything he did which is stressful when you have so much on your plate and I often wondered if it was stress that caused it.  But from everything I've read and learned it is an idiopathic disease meaning we just don't know what causes it.  Maybe your mom is having a hard time dealing with it and wants to believe somehow you could fix it.  But it can't be fixed.  We hope in the future there will be a cure.  It IS NOT your fault.  It was devastating for my son the first couple of years.  His father and myself were devastated as well.  With our support and love and going back and forth to the doctor every 3 weeks for shots in his head, etc., he still lost all of his hair everywhere.  He finally came to accept this and became even more driven to do well in his life.  If he couldn't control his hair he could at least control everything else and he worked hard to do just that.  He is 27 now.  Hang in there.
