Hello.  We are new to the world of alopecia areata.  My 3 year old daughter was just diagnosed with an atypical presentation.  She has diffuse AA…basically she is thinning all over her scalp.  The dermatologist believes she will soon be almost completely bald but he doesn't think she will have alopecia totalis.  That's about all the information he could give me.  We are going to start topical steroids but no other treatment beyond that.  Can anyone share with me their experience with a diffuse presentation?  What sort of pattern of regrowth, etc did you find?

Also, when did you all decide to go ahead and shave the last few hairs?  We want to positively reinforce our daughter and not make her feel bad because she is different.  This is just her normal.  Of course, inside, this mama is really sad. She has always had the most beautiful head of thick curly hair.  I'm just trying to put it all in perspective.  My daughter is healthy.

Any help or information would be great.

Hello

When my daughter was first diagnosed with alopecia she presented with diffuse loss...which eventually went on to be AU.  Since that time she has had regrowth and loss many times...she was diagnosed at 12 and is now 22.

There is no set way that alopecia happens to people and at this time there is also no known cure.

It is absolutely ok to grieve and feel sad about this situation it is very sad and I so wish you and your daughter were not having to deal with this condition.

I also want to assure you that you and her will find your way and that there is support here for you.  Read through the many threads that are here using some key words etc.  This will help you get the information you may need.

I'm pleased you are here and researching for yourself and her.  You are obviously a great mum doing her best to find her way.

If I can help in any way please feel free to leave a message here or friend me.

Hugs

Rosy

Hi There,  I have the same thing.  It's really frustrating!  Sometimes my hair grows back, all of it, thick and curly as ever.  Then, around Thanksgiving it starts to fall out again.  By Feb./Mar. I'm back in a wig.  I'm interested to see what will come next!  Alopecia is one of the most frustrating thing!  Although, I feel for you more.  I would hate to see my baby go through this.
