Can we talk about keeping a wig on a bald head, and other things?

I noticed that a lot of the discussions were started about 3 years ago, and surely there is new products and information available.

I wore wigs back in the 69s & 70s, then started again about 4 yrs ago because of thinning hair and needing to look presentable on a moments notice when my husband was terminally ill. So, not exactly a newby, but dealing with a different situation now. I'm bald because of AU - diagnosed in Nov 2016 on the heels of a granuloma diagnosis in 2015.

I have a dozen or so wigs that I would like to (continue) wearing, so buying a new one is not in the picture. Especially a very expensive one. Here are my problems and what I have already tried:

The wigs fit differently (looser) without hair; very roomy on top where hair would normally be piled. Have sewn in a small shoulder pad at the crown.

My scalp is somewhat irritated from the wig interiors, and get itchy in places. Will scalpacin help with this?

Have exclusively worn scarves for over a month to clear up a scalp rash, but need fullness on top. The terrycloth wig cap does not fit me properly and puckers on top (which shows thru the scarf). Also tends to loosen / stretch making the scarf slide.

My wigs really tend to creep up in the back at the nape. Just tried wig tape and it really holds.

Wigs tend to slip forward. Tried Wigrip Velour bands and they hold in the front, but slide up in the back taking the wig with them. Must be the shape of my head. Saw where some suggested dermafx, but its no longer on the market. Found some silicone strips to sew in the wig front on Lori's website and I think they are going to work well, but are a little expensive. Have Googled myself silly trying to find more silicone strips for a price comparison, but to no avail.

I'm hoping others will chime in as I'd also like to discuss some money saving beauty tricks as to dealing with no eyelashes, permanent make-up, etc.

Hi!

Some thoughts:

1. Go to a tailor and have a wig cap made that is measured for your scalp.  You can pick up the material at any Joann's or material store, then go straight to the tailor and have him/her measure your scalp and craft something that is just for you.  If you have a wig shop and/or wigmaker in your area that has a repair person, that's even better.

2. You can also have silk or cotton sewn into the interior of your wig.  That would cut down on the feel of the wefts and hair, etc.

3. If you decide to do a wig cap, I suggest cotton because it's more breathable. Since you've had a scalp infection and tend to get itchy/irritated, I'd suggest staying away from silicon.  It is likely to be a little hotter and to rub against your scalp - which might cause irritation.

4. If the wigs are loose in general, try tightening the bands at the back.  You can also see if a tailor would be willing to tighten up the sides.

Hope this helps.  I've learned over the years that a good tailor/wig repair person makes a big difference! :)
