I just wondered if anyone had their AA begin after another illness. My 5 year old was diagnosed with AA...and this all happened after the magical "3 month mark" of several illnesses she had. 3 months prior she was diagnosed with an ear tumor, had a very bad flu like illness with a high fever for 4-5 days and contracted molluscum contagiosum (a viral skin disease). It seemed she had the perfect storm and her poor little body went through so much.

I am curious if anyone else had their hair loss begin after a similar situation (of illness). Every doctor and dermatologist tells me that it is just AA and it is unpredictable, don't know what triggers it, blah blah blah. When I ask if it could be from her being sick they just say "well I have never heard of that before".

Please share.

My daughter was diagnosed at 3 years 7 months after a severe illness the doc originally thought it was due to the illness where after 3 months it can lead the hair follicles to become dormant and hair loss possible ..... But after 7 months and 60 percent thinning and 5 smooth round bald patches the size ranging from tiny to fairly large they confirmed AA I'm living in hope every day that it will all grow back x

My daughter lost all her hair when she was 3 years old. 6 months prior to losing her hair she had an epigastric hernia repair done. and a few days before her hair falling out she had severe gastroenteritis. She was vomiting for a couple days and then had diarrhea for the following week while having a fever throughout. She lost all her hair within months and has been completely bald ever since. She is 5 years old now. I'm convinced that her AA was triggered by her illness, I just wish I knew the trigger to grow her hair back.

Thank you both for your replies. Even though the doctors won't confirm it... I too am convinced that my daughters AA was triggered by her illness. One nurse said that it did seem likely...but wouldn't say for sure. Do either of you use any medications (steroids, etc.)? We use Fluocinonide twice a day. The first two bald spots are growing back but she keeps developing new bald spots at a much faster pace. I am hopeful that one day it will all grow back -- I too wish I knew the trigger. Best of luck to both of you and your children.

My daughter's was triggered by a mono/strep illness. They say it is caused by stress which means a stress to the immune system. They have found a gene but something has to trigger the condition. It makes sense that this caused it in your child.

Karen you're comment is interesting...my son lost all his hair when he was 3 years old and two months prior to this we were bombarded with a life changing experience that would leave my husband disabled and unable to work. It put a tremendous amount of stress on us...my sons hair fell off rapidly. He has no hair at all...i asked his doctors if it could be because of all the stress his dad and I were under because he is extremely close to his dad and they all said no. I took him to an herbalist and massage therapist and she said my son had a big amount of stress for being only 5. My grandmother told me it was probably due to stress also and he was always sick as a kid with asthma extreme allergies rsv...so now I am wondering if this could be the issue and how i can fix it.
Hi there, my daughter was diagnosed with aa 3 weeks ago. She is 5 as well. With the research I have done it seems that a lot of times there is an underlying cause or illness that triggers the aa. In my daughters case I'm not sure what but am asking for blood work to be done at her next visit. She has had a wheezy like cough for about six months now. Her doctor prescribed her a topical steroid and an expensive acne cream but I have not used them on her, I really would rather use natural remedies because of her age. Hope this helps and God bless!

I agree with all these posts. Our daughter had a non specific virus (not formally diagnosed) which gave her severe stomach cramps and left her washed out and lacking energy for ages around the magic three months prior to diagnosis of AA (with ophasis pattern) We are now 3 1/2 months in to treatment using steroid gel and have seen significant re growth (approx. 2 cms in the best bits) along with several new patches on the top. Back to dermatologist this week. Thinking of you all. x

hello,

I believe this was the case with my 4 year old daughter. last we couldn't get out off illnesses (colds, flu, bronchitis. ..you name it). high fevers of over 39 that lasted for a week at at a time. this lasted for 7+ months, and then boom, first patch appeared. she was sick 3 times again since this September,  and after last fever rapidly lost most of her hair (her eyebrows went with the first wave of AA). so, now we see just working on strengthening her immune system. .. hang in there, and good luck!

Sorry for what your daughter has had to go through.  I know too well how having a continual sick child is.  Some parents don't realize how lucky they are their child gets some illness and the doctor gives them medicine and boom they are all better in a week.  I just wish there was a quick fix for alopecia and other illnesses.  We still battle the AA and all her other skin disorders.  The ear tumor is gone but for now she is totally deaf in one ear.  She has one more surgery to rebuild her ear our of titanium...so hopefully her hearing (or at least some) will return.  Best of luck to you and your child.  I hope she is getting stronger every day.

I had a copper iud fitted in August of 2011. I believe the person who fitted it was completely incompetent and it was fitted in the wrong position. After around eight weeks of constant pain and bleeding I had it removed. My hair began to fall out late December 2011. I am convinced that the stress and pain ( and possible rejection of the iud by my body) is what triggered my aa.

I am so sorry you had to go through all that.  Are  you doing better now?

I've always been told its based on stress - so any stress to the body can cause it - esp illness.

I'm currently sick with a cold (going on 2 weeks) - no voice, coughing, etc - and my hair is coming out so very fast.  Even the littlest of sickness makes mine worse!
