Okay I felt that this discussion was much needed. I'm looking through various blogs and discussions to find wig info...thought it would be helpful to start a discussion that could help keep it all in one place.

I know NOTHING about wigs! And I think it's time to start looking. I hear things like...lace, vaccuum, monofilament...I don't know what these things mean! Can someone please help with sort of a Wigs 101 intro to different terminologies like these?

Also, let's all list good websites to go to, brand recommendations (with links), etc!

This will be sooo helpful to me, and I'm sure to many others. Thanks for helping!

Wow, really? I would just like to keep it as low as possible but still not looking like a wig. What wigs do you have?
These days I wear "Claire" by Noriko. The piece in my profile pic is from Look of Love...it's not a wig it's a topper, which is kind of like a toupee that clips on. It's human hair and and it cost $200 or so...I wouldn't recommend that particular piece for you, though. I had to stop wearing it because I lost too much hair at the back of my head and if there was a gust of wind my bald spot would show. Most of my hair loss is on top of my head, like you, but I have a weird spotty area on the back of my head. Not attractive.

This is the next wig I'm going to buy: http://www.wigs.md/pages/wigs_simplybeautiful_impressive_623.shtml
It's only $169 when you add it to your shopping cart.

I currently wear this: http://www.wigs.md/pages/wigs_noriko_claire_1647.shtml
It's only $83 when you add it to your shopping cart. Most other online places sell it for $160 or so, and I paid $180 for it in a local store. I'm all for supporting local business, but ouch!

Someone else recommended this, and I say find a wig shop and try on some wigs and see how they feel. If you don't feel too bad about it, don't buy anything but remember the brand, model, and color and buy it online. For your first wig it might be easier to just pop into a store and buy it. Since I know what colors and styles I like, I don't have too many problems shopping online. I like Revlon, Raquel Welch, and Noriko wigs (though sometimes Norikos feel like they have too much hair).
I ordered my new wig (the Revlon in the link above). I'll report on my experience with www.wigs.md and I'll post pics when it arrives in the mail.
Way cute!!
Hi Mandy,

I've tried all kind of wigs except the vacuum (I don't think I'd be able to stand the heat, I live in So Cal). In my experience, human hair is the way to go, I had a synthetic wig and couldn't use it for more than 2 weeks, yeah, they're cheaper but they don't look as good as human hair (maybe when they're new they do) and most importantly, they don't feel good, my shoulders and neck were itchy all the time. I've had monotop human hair wigs and they look good, it's nice to be able to part them anywhere you want, but I hated dealing with not-so natural hairline and with straps on the back of my neck. By the way, a hand made cap is important if you're bald, I had a skin top that felt good; the machine made wefted caps are rough on skin and if it's windy, it's easy to see a bald head thru them. Also, the ear tabs on most wigs are not very comfortable. That is why I decide to buy a full lace wig, it looks great and it feels soooo good. I can run my fingers thru my hair and I love not to feel any strap or rough edges, I can also wear my sunglasses and don't get a headache now ( again, the ear tabs in other wigs it's something I can't stand), I can even put my hair up on a ponytail. The only not so great thing about wearing lace wigs is dealing with glue or tape( it's time consuming). I don't use glue, I use tape, because I heard glue is messy and because I don't wanna keep my wig on for days or weeks, I remove it every night. Anyways, that's my experience but what works for some people don't work for other so I think you'll have to experiment a little until you find a wig that suits you, I would recommend to go to a wig store and try different styles on and then look for them online( you can always find better prices online). I've attached some pics so that you can look at the hairline. Hope this helps :-)
Which of your wigs is this with these hairlines?
Full Lace wig
How fragile is a lace wig? Can you swim or do sports in it?
There are two types of lace wigs the most popular is French Lace it is more durable and can last for 1-2 years and Swiss Lace is thinner but more delicate. You can see my hairline up close. I normally add bleached knots for my customers at the hairline so you cannot see any of the knots.

You can swim in the wig but I would recommend a swim cap and you can most certainly do sports in it.
I just read this...I am so desparately looking for a lace wig . I live in san diego and would love to see your photos and know the place you bought them. do you get a natural hairline from temple to temple . That is what I am looking for .
hi one site which I found was headcovers.com there is a variety of wigs and some prices are not bad they sell wigs, bangs for hats, partial wigs etc and their customer service line is very helpful and the shipping is really fast too. I think the monofilament wig is one of the cooler to wear it is the style we have for our daughter and the top isnt totally enclosed with materiel. Not sure about the vaccum style but I believe it is made special for your head they do a mold so when you wear it, it suctions to you head so you can swim do flips in the air if you feel the need and it will stay put. Peggy knight solutions I think is one site, you can request info from but they have no prices so I would guess they are pricey but probaly really worth it! Good luck:)
